We took a 6am bus to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, my only Chile stop. I'm a bit disappointed that I didn’t even fit Santiago into this trip but it’s even more of an excuse to come back and do Patagonia. Apart from the early start it was an amazing bus ride. The scenery was stunning. Crossing the Andes into Chile we went through switch-back roads and desert. We arrived to find our hostel and wander around the five square blocks that are the whole town. San Pedro de Atacama as the name suggests is in the Atacama desert, the driest desert in the world. The town basically exists due to gringos heading into the Salt flats. So all of the shops are either internet cafes, up market restaurants or tour companies, but having said that, it is a lovely town just to relax in.
