Where I stayed
Beautiful journey through The Reserva Nacional Salina Y Aguada Blanco to reach Chivay. Stunning mountains and scenery; very windy steep roads. Saw llama/alpaca on route.
At the bus station we caught a tuktuk to the hotel.
Chivay is a really small place, with a lovely Plaza De Armas. As it is so high the views are amazing. Chivay is 3600m above sea level. As with Arequipa, in the day the weather is lovely, beautiful blue skies, but it is colder, even in the day, but especially at night. Unfortunately the hotel and most of the restaurants don't have any heating so we had to wear a lot of layers, including hats and gloves! We both had headaches caused by the altitude and the cold.
We visited the Colca Canyon, which is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. We took a two hour bus journey to the Cruz Del Condor, a point in the canyon where it is possible to watch the condors flying. The condors were amazing, so graceful and flying quite close to the look out point. We spent a lot of time admiring the stunning view of the canyon.
Back in Chivay we visited La Calera - natural hot springs. Visited the outdoor and indoor pools, really relaxing.
