Well, the sojourn to England has begun.  Today, after multiple days of lengthy goodbyes and visiting with mom, dad, and sister, I disembarked from Grants Pass to begin what will surely be an amazing summer experience. Today was the most familiar leg of the journey, but I still experienced a lot of new places and even managed to get myself lost - twice, to boot.  The journey up I-5 in my trusty Honda Accord named 'Illy' (after the Illinois River and the good memories had there) was nothing to write home about, but still blog-worthy.
I made plans to meet up with Allie and Tabitha at Allie's house in Tualatin south of Portland, but managed to get off at the Canby exit and proceeded down the road even though it led clearly in the opposite direction of my destination. My fine navigation skills were no match for my stubborn attitude as I plunged further down the road to Canby, where I ended up at a standstill and no signs pointing to Tualatin. I later discovered that had I listened more carefully to Tab's directions, I would've realized there was a whole exit, complete with huge green exit sign dedicated to taking me right to Tualatin. However, instead of just backtracking to the interstate, I thought it would instead be a better time to try out the GPS system dad lent me for the trip.  My fluency in GPS technology is abhorrent, apparently, and I only confused myself and the computer on my location.  I eventually landed back on I-5 heading in the right direction, but at the expense of 45 minutes of confusion.
Me, Tabtastic, Katie, and Ally gathered at Ally's house and shot the breeze while watching prison-like-bra infomercials and fatburning-wondermercials.  Rick, the wonderkid eventually showed up with his brother Rudie, who are both pretty amazing guys and made the get-together all that more enjoyable.  The rest of the night could be explained in greater detail, but it suffices to say it was all a lot of fun.  At around 12:30 I decided to write down directions to Kevin's house and try my hand at navigating there at night.
Everything was fine until I reached the actual city-part of Portland. To put it shortly, I got lazy and missed reading signs that would've kept me on I-5, and instead I found myself deep in Portland State University territory among heaps of closed streets due to construction and very desolated boulevards.  Somehow, I managed to get myself righted and back on I-5 heading in the right direction, and voila!  I arrived at Kevin's!  It was really good to see him, and I was able to meet his friend Courtney, who was also a remarkably nice and laid-back person.  I just don't know what I'm going to do with all these new cool people in my life.  Invariably we talked, watched youtube videos (I had never seen the "Leave Britney Alone" guy, a tragedy some apparently claim), and read Kevin's old two-person script he wrote, which turned out to be pretty well put together.  And now it's 4:00 a.m. in Portland, and I'm getting ready for bed.  More to write eventually tomorrow, but for now I'm just counting down the hours until I fly out and hop across the pond!
