Killarney, Ireland

August 7

Day 18: Called a taxi after missing a bus into town. Then a train to Killarney to camp near Killarney Natl. Park. In the evening walked into town, had some drinks at a pub and met some Canadians.

Day 19: Walked through Killarney Natl. Park, followed trails to Muckross House. A lovely 1840's mansion. A big black dog befriended us and walked around the park with us for quite a while. 'Pup' was alpha male, but respected us as part of his pack. If we stopped to look at the map, he would wait at our heels. After a long walk, Pup left us and continued on to the Torc waterfall. Then we returned to the mansion and took a nap on the lawn, when we woke up, Pup was sleeping right beside us! I wanted to take him home with us, but Kyle said no. We asked a groundskeeper what we should do with him, and he said that Pup lived in the park. Ate dinner in a pub and watched the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. We were amazed!

Day 20: Got on a tour bus to see the famous region known as The Ring of Kerry. Some good sights, but it was too misty to see far out into the ocean or the tops of mountains. A funny bus driver though, said after tourist season ends, he'd have to go back to the psychiatric ward. Back at the campsite we talked with some young girls who wanted to know all about the United States, the famed home of Hannah Montana.
