Packed two backpacks with a few shirts and shorts each, bathers and beach towels and a camera bag and headed for the port of Livadi to catch the Agios Georgios ferry to Milos which took about 3 hours to arrive at. This was the first time I have travelled with just a pack on my back and no idea of where I would be spending the night.
Before boarding the ferry we had an entertaining morning tea at a café by the port with Con and a few locals. It was all Greek to me. Everyone was smoking, taking rude in Greek and laughing lots. It was strangely relaxing and funny to watch the embarrassment on Michael’s face because of the way his father was talking. He tried to translate for me and tame down the language. Michael likes how the Greeks will mix up words to tell a funny story or make jokes.
We boarded the ferry at 12pm abnd set sail with Michael’s family there to see us off. We got coffee and cheese pies (I’m addicted to these now) and sat in the coffee shop on the ferry with a beautiful view of the Aegean Sea. Half way through the journey we moved about the ferry to view the other decks. We sat near the top deck on some bench seats and caught the crisp, cool air off the sea and relaxed, such a wonderful way to pass three hours.
The only stop along the way was Sifnos, a smaller island with a nice small port. I sometimes wonder how the ferries managed to fit into the small bays to offload and collect more passengers. It still excites me to pull into the ports and watch the cars, trucks and people exiting and entering the big ships.
