Today we went to the Blue Mosque and the St. Sopia mosque and walked around the hyprodrome. The Sultanahmet Imperial Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, was built in the 17th century by the architect Mehmet. It is called the Blue Mosque because of its magnificent interior decoration of blue Iznik titles. The St. Sopia is an ancient basilica, built by Constantine the Great, in the 4th century and reconstructed by Justinian in the 6th century, it burnt down twice. The Hippodrome is the scene of ancient chariot races, the ancient Hippodrome, with its four monuments: the German Fountain of Wilhelm II, the Obelisk of Theodosius, the bronze Serpentine Column and the Column of Contantine. We than went for lunch and had homemade crepes. We watched two old women make them the old fashion way rolling it out and sticking it on a stove type thing. Next we went to the Topkapi Palace and wondered around for three hours. The gardens leading up to the palace are breath taking. There where all sorts of jewelry and crowns and thrones. There was even a diamond broach that was 86 carts! Talk about amazing. The Topkapi Palace was my favorite next to the Blue Mosque. It was the great palace of the Ottoman sultans from the 15th to the 19th centuries, housing an exquisite collection of crystal, silver and Chinese porcelain and robes worn by the sultans and their families. Afterwards Andi and I went to the Islamic and Turkish Art Museum. We saw a ton of old rugs and interesting doors and sculpts. On our way home we saw an outdoor concert taking place. After a quick nap and shower we went to Istiklal Street, an old famous street, and walked up and down that and had dinner at a sandwich shop. I ordered a tuna melt what I got was tuna, corn, mayo, lettuce, tomato and chesse. As weird as it was it hit the spot. After walking around for a bit we found an outdoor bar/cafe where we smoked hookah and had a drink. We met three guys from london who are traveling all over the middle east. We had so much fun sitting outside listening to music and dancing and clapping. We all walked away with the biggest smiles on our face.
