Where I stayed
Smangus Homestay
This is the 4th time that I visit friends in Smangus ( Semakuse ) village on 1.500m altitude and teach English to a wonderful, smart and interested group of friends with indigenous background. Although the village ( bulo ) Smangus belongs to the Atayal tribe, several of my students belong to other tribes, such as Amis and Beinan, spouses from the East Coast. Their names are Wally, I-Huei, Uli, Lahuy, Sabi ( teacher at local 12 students primary school, Han Chinese ), Binas, Dche Mu, and sometimes others. It's the fourth time that I stay for a week for English during the last 4 months, but I have been in Smangus at least 20 times, mostly in connection with hikes or river tracing.
My day usually begins with my own bread breakfast on the front porch, continues with a 2 to 3 hours hike in the surrounding forests, a lunch with village people in the communal and homestay restaurant, book reading on the outdoor platform of the coffee shop with an excellent Cafe Latte and a waffle, enjoying the spectecular vistas on the valleys and mountains 2000m and above. After dinner, which I either take with the village people or with the teachers in the restaurant or with my friends in their home we hold our English sessions from 7:00pm to 9:00 or 10:00pm.
There would be a lot more to say and write, but will only add more from time to time. I will write some explanatory texts to the photos. Unluckily I have only photos from the last trip as one chip in the digital camera is damaged. I'll try to get it fixed. If and when I will hopefully succeed I will let you know and add photos, going " back in time " ---- Problem fixed; see added previous entries.
