Who would have ever thought we would be visiting Slovakia! Its as much a surprise to you as it is to us. We decided we wanted to make our way to Budapest and Bratislava was the best city to visit on the way. Bratislava is Slovakia's capital and their biggest city at 400,000 people so there wasn’t too much happening. Slovakia was a communist run country until 1991 so there is an odd mix of old very straightforward architecture and western world shopping malls and entertainment. It was the first city that we came across actual shopping complexes and "WalMartesque" stores.

We spent the first night in a campsite but after discovering there was no hot water for the showers and that it was pretty far away from the city we decided to move to a hostel in the city center. Hostel Patio was within walking distance to all the sites and had a great atmosphere. Now Bratislava’s city centre isn’t a huge place and their “tourist” attractions although nice aren’t the most fabulous after seeing Cathedrals in Paris and Barcelona and castles like Mont St Michel…okay so maybe we are getting a little spoiled…but the walk was nice and the views of the city from the top of the castle were very picturesque. We ended up seeing all the sites in a few hours. One of the fun things about the city is their very random statues placed in very random places throughout the downtown area. There was a statue of a man coming out of a sewer and a few other odd ones that were fun to run into.

After all the sightseeing we went back to the hostel and joined the party downstairs where a large group of Budapest students were enjoying a few drinks. This group had come to Bratislava for the weekend and it was fun getting to know them all since most of them were exchange students from America, Finland and Belgium. Everyone had a cool story as to why they decided to go to school in Budapest and how they were enjoying travelling. One things for sure…once everyone started travelling they caught the bug and couldn’t stop! We all decided to go out to a bar for a few drinks and a little getting to know each other. We ended up talking to a couple guys from the USA most of the night and decided to meet up again in Budapest. After a few more beers (none for me) we called it a night and headed back to the hostel. Everyone left the next day so me and Chris just relaxed.

Since I always have to mention the food…we went to a small Slovakian/Italian restaurant and got soup in a bun. I ordered the cream of mushroom and Chris ordered the cream of Garlic. Most amazing soup of my life. Me and Chris both devoured our soups and then ate the bowl! We just couldn’t stop.

Well after all the sightseeing, friend making and delicious food eating it was off to Budapest, Hungary.
