We ended up leaving New zealand about as fast as we got there.  I suppose you thought this whole post was going to be about Australia?  Nope, too bad.  We still had to get onto our next plane for the 3 hour flight to Sydney... and didn't tell you about that yet.  Maddy did great on that too, but WE weren't so lucky.  We had a three year little girl with a runny nose and a rash that looked like chicken pocks in front of us and she happened to be obsessed with maddy.  Mike and I were horrifed because she kept reaching for Maddy's hands and face. Then behind us there was an elderly couple that were fasinated with Maddy and delighed in making her laugh.  This would have been great but they kept coughing and wanted to touch Maddy's hands and face too! Don't they know kids have fragile immune system at her age? Thank God for hand sanitizer.  The grand finale of the flight occured shortly before landing in Syndey, when Maddy peed on Mike's lap.   We had been working to keep her well hydrated during the flight with lots of treats and water from sippy cup, and apparently we were successful... since she managed to fill her diaper in three hours and still had a bit more to share with Mike.  Fortunately it was only a small leak, but Mike seemed to think it was a big deal :-).

When we got off the plane it was sunny, but a bit cold.  From the airport, we decided to hop on the subway to get to long-awaited hotel... alt ho theterm "hopping on the subway" may not apply to a family of five with as much luggage as we had, but I'll use it anyway.   Once at the hotel, we rested a bit and refreshed ourselves and then later in the day we walked around the city and explored a little bit.  That afternoon we took the ferry over to Manly (a beach neighborhood across the harbor) to go meet Murray and his wife Nadia and their 8 month old daughter Arabel.  It was great to hang out with them all and meet little Arabel-- what a cutey!  Mike really enjoyed catching up with Murray, who had last seen Maddy when she was one week old.  Murry is a friend from high school and post-college who is also in the software industry.  Nadia is currently a yoga instructor, and they have been in Sydney together for 7 years now.  They are a really nice couple, and extremely hospitable.  They showed us around the town area and gave us lots of great travel / planning tips.  We went walking on the Manley coast on a beach trail. It was bit chilly but nice.  Lots of surfers were enjoying the waves, yet we noticed they were wearing wetsuits... have to keep reminding ourselves that it is winter here. Then we walked to a great Thai restraunt and had a lovely diner.  Manly is like an upscale New York neighborhood except that it has great beaches everywhere and a unique australian feel.  Very trendy and expensive; houses here are over a million dollars just for a small one!
