Today was my first trip to the Kalmar FF Arena. This is the Football Arena that opened last year to house the Kalmar football team. Being from Kalmar naturally means that this is the team that Victor supports. He followed the team last year while being in California and took me to a game last fall around the end of the season. The best part about the arena is that it is sponsored by the local chicken farm, so it is literally called the Golden Bird Arena and has a big emblem with a chicken on the side. The walls light up at night and sometimes when it is red it looks like a KFC box.

Being an American means that I can see that Soccer (Football) is only a game. I go not get all hyped up about the game. I admit that it is a good game and is far more entertaining that American football is. However, when the game is over my happiness does not depend on if my team won or lost. However, I have never been a fanatic for any sport, so maybe being an American is not the best argument when discussing soccer.

I can say however, that professional male soccer players are total divas and actually big babies. It blows my mind how many times they hit the ground and roll around as if they just broke all of the bones in their face, but then get up and continue playing the game as if nothing had actually happened to them. Now, yes some of the falls that they took look like they could of course hurt, but today I think I watched ten or more players roll around as if in excruciating pain and then get up and continue running as if there was no tomorrow. This may be the macho male shake it off attitude, or they just could be blowing it out of proportion, I think the latter. Of all the players that hit the ground only two needed medical attention and only one left the field limping…he may have had an actual injury. Yet, the real injuries are lost in all of the drama. I mean when the other players start running past you and the referee walks around you to continue the game you know that there is a diva issue and not a medical issue.

I watched the women's world cup and I watched the women world cup. They fought just as hard, but the men may have more to lose because their professional clubs are more highly regarded than the female professional teams, (in the countries where both exist,) so they act out more. If the women went down and did not get up there was a reason.

Either way the game was fun.

This was the first match of the season on the home field and……they lost. 2-1. The Kalmar team apparently has had a hard time fighting what is considered a tough team from Stockholm or at least the team with the toughest fans. They fans literally sang the entire game. I would love to see what would happen if they went up against some Raider or Dodger fans…. The singing must have kept them warm, because it certainly was not warm outside. However, they also had fireworks or road flares with them in the stands. Victor said that they were not exactly allowed. However, there was not exactly any security stopping the smoke, even though it wafted throughout the entire stadium and went off during the whole game.

It was a fun game. I would love to go back and have requested a Kalmar Jersey for a present, (I requested it for Christmas, but that didn’t happen.) I think I would like to try a game in the summer so that I do not have to wear three layers plus a scarf and gloves to go to a game that did not involve snow. This is the first of what I can assume are many games, hopefully next time I watch Kalmar play, they will win.
