The ten hour Ferry ride from Ometepe to San Carlos was crap and quite painful to my muscles, bones and patience.. if i were to do it again i'd buy a cheap hammock to string up to the many polls and bars available on the deck of the primero class and sleep right through.. After most of the night fidgeting in discontent I gave up on the bench for a nice flat cold steel floor on the outer edge of the ferry and instantly fell into a deep sleep. A couple of hours later I was awoken by people shuffling around me, taking photos of the greatest sunrise I've ever witnessed in my life, I haven't seen many but this mornings beuna vista was as colourful as any rainbow.

Next was the Boat ride to El Castillo which was a bit of a contrast to the slow ferry, the journey down the Rio San Juan was now in daylight, unstable, fast and accompanied by an unfortunate loud outboard motor that killed the tranquility of our surroundings. On a hill overlooking rapids, as the fort came into view it was an awesome unforgettable sight, only a modest size but looked proud and powerful and must have been quite an annoyance for the old pirates going upstream on their way to sack Granada.

The small river village of El Castillo is a refreshing and relaxing place to be, the air here is clear and unpolluted and the constant beeping of car and bus horns has been replaced by a soft background sound of the water slowly making its way to the Caribbean Sea. The history and beauty of the river has sucked me into a 5 day canoe adventure to San Juan del Norte. It started out as a passing reference inspired from the 'Into the Wild' movie I'd made about getting a kayak and heading off to see where it takes us to another backpacker and a couple of days later it has come to fruition literally minutes before we boarded the twice weekly motor boat down the river.
