When i arrived I managed to latch onto a British backpacking couple who had overpacked with a 65ltr bag abd extra daypack each but because of that they had an up to date lonely planet yuchatan peninsula guiebook, the girl was happy to show me directions to the albergue la Candelaria hostel and we parted ways, not sure for how long as their ruta maya sounds very similar to mine. That hostel was temperally shut for maintenece so walked back along calle 44 to hotel lily and for 180 pesos got a basic fan cooled room to myself with very basic ensuite to rest out the midday heat before setting off exploring the nearby Ek Balam ruins..

..just got back from ek balam, i found them very impressive, i should have got a guide to shiw me round though. Overall it turned out quite expensive for me, on the way there I was waiting at the collectivo taxi stand.. There was no one else around wanting to go my way, a taxi pulled up and said it would be 100 to charter the ride.. I accepted a 80 peso round to go and hoped I'd be able to pay Just 20 back. The ruins aren't near a town so looking to share on the way back with locals was out.. The site less crowded than Tukum and looks grander.

So I spent little over an hour wandering the site and ate my packed lunch on top of the tallest structure, looking around I was trying to imagine what had changed of the scenery.. And also wondered what the site looked like when in use and when first rediscovered. On the biggest structure some of it has been cleaned up so much I'm not sure if it was just modern day plaster or not.. I didn't really like the thatched roofs on the structure either. So the journey back I got stitched up, as this next driver was wanting 100 pesos for the return journey, I tries telling him 80 but he wasn't having it.. It was also nearly five pm and the place was closing so wouldn't have got another taxi till tomorow so gave in, as always to make me feel better when overcharged I put it back into pounds sterling and realise I paid just over 4 and is what I've paid to my local pub under half a mile away, just up a steep hill.

Early tomorow morning I'm gonna take my backpack with me to chitchen itza and afterwards carrying it on to Merida.. This small town of Valladolid seems quaint but nothing really interests me here, the same with Mexico as a whole, the current culture doesn't interest me at all.. Maybe if I was drinking then maybe I would take the travelling a bit slower but I'm not, so just chasing my favourite mayan ruins around until I get to Belize and the Caribbean.
