anyway i failed finding the racetrack, it would have probably been a waste of time if i did find it, so i went out in pursuit of crocodiles.. when i was in oz i can't remember seeing any wild crocs, only the captive ones in steve irwins australia zoo.
. anyway my guidebook says that you can get a more 'authentic experience' if you get a local fisherman to take you up the actual black river river.. what a load of bullshit.. i hung around the bridge looking for a local to take me up in his boat, and was approached by some fat guy who told me he had a boat and would take me on a tour to see these crocs.. i thought sweet, it's probably better to put money straight into this guys pocket than the big companies who get a couple of bus loads of tourists each day..
it cost about the same, 30usd and he told me i'd get a tour up the river lasting 1 and 1/2 hours.. so i get in his small boat and he starts up the engine and head the 20metres to the other bank to see this croc on a concrete wall , i think damn there must be sh*loads of them in this river, show me more.. anyway we move another 30 metres up river to see this next one in the water, which i enjoyed being so close to these creatures and was pretty happy with how the tour was going.. anyway the next 20minutes we head up river at a snails pace past reeds and mangroves and no sight of any more crocs.. i was bored now coz my 'tour guide' hasn't said a word to me and i've attempted to open a conversation with him for yes/no answers to be replied..
he then stopped at a little curve and told me this was as far as the tour goes and here he normally lets people out for a swim.
. bollox, this tour sucks.. i asked if he'd go round the bend to see what was there and he replied it's too shallow round there.. he's chatting shit now coz when i said 'f**k it, lets just head back' a boat from one of the bigger companies came cruising by and up the river where it was apparently too shallow, so i told him to floor it as if i wasn't get much out of this tour i might as well get some adrenalin by speeding down the river, his engine was too poxy to create any sense of acceleration and we manage to get back to the start to in about 35 minutes after i left.. i paid him the full amount to avoid any unnecessary hassle and when he asked me in a monotone voice if i'd enjoyed the tour, before i walked off in search of a bar with cold beer and poker machines i replied 'it was rubbish'
next up is a trip back to kingston and then head up to climb Blue mountain peak..
After ditching treasure beach i checked into the cheap bridghouse inn in Black river, costing 1200 J which is 18.5 usd.. I found the internet in the garishly painted local library and then headed to find the old horseracing track which they had back in the day when black river was the second most important town in jamaica after kingston... another strange fact i heard from listening to irie fm which is the dancehall and reggae station on the island but also gives out a short history lesson daily, and today happened to be about Black river was that the first car in jamaica was spotted in this town and secondly the owner of the car was also the first person to be admitted into the black river hospital..
