Where I stayed
Paraiso Cano Hondo
I've always been interested in the culture and the life of the local people who were here in the caribbean before christopher columbus came and started off the wipe out that followed. I read that the los haitises had some caves where the tainos used to live and had many petroglyphs and pictographs (i think i got the terms right).. anyway, i wasn't disappointed. I checked into a magnificent hotel called Paraiso Cano Hondo, which is a tourist destination just on it's own with it's rivers, waterfalls and pools that the Dominicans travel all over to bathe in. I was here for the caves though, so i immediately booked a boat tour through the mangroves and into the caves. I'm really pissed that i didn't buy a disposable camera for this trip.. that first part through the mangroves and then opening onto a broad piece of water was stunning.
Then when it came to the caves it was breathtaking, just thinking back to what it was like over 500 years ago and not much may have changed scenary wise. The paintings were awesome, ibecause i didn't have a camera the guide gave me extra time to admire them and copy them into my drawings. I would have liked more time to study them but the tour guide probably wasn't going to wait the 3 or 4 days i needed.
the way back the weather turned nasty and i was totally soaked but still in a good mood, when i arrived back to the hotel there were many families and bikini clad babes bathing in the waterfalls, the second called for a few grands presidentes.. i got talking to a girl with a hot body wearing a skimpy 'rio de janeiro' style bikini who was here with about 15 members of her family, they'd come for the day out from a town called Hato Mayor, after us getting on well she offered if i wanted to go out, keep on drinking and party with them.. There can't be many straight men around that wouldn't be packing their backpack and checking out of the hotel within 5 minutes. so that's what i done a headed off in a party vibed minivan for Hato Mayor.
