Where I stayed
i've survived my first 5 days in this dodgy town of Port of Spain, i've
obviously been catering to my alcoholicism and have visited a few
bars.. the first one i went to was trotters, which is an expat bar with
extreme air conditioning and complimenty chicken wings that i took
advantage.. actually took the piss with.. and it's just around the
corner from a hooters bar which i'll have to visit one day soon..
when walking around downtown port of spain in the daytime, it feels
quite a safe, i don't have jewellery and don't bring out my camera as
it's likely to become someones girlfriends christmas present this
year... i've noticed the trinis are incapable of walking in a straight
line, as they're more laid back and slow on the sidewalks, i find
myself always overtaking them, it just takes some planning and guesing
which way they will swerve on the pavement just as i'm about to pass.
Strangely though if i'm walking towards them and they are bang in the
middle of the pavement walking towards me they immediatly learn how to
walk in a straight line and don't give space either way.. needless to
say i find myself walking along the edge of the road most days..
in the mornings i've found a little knock-off starbucks chain
called 'rituals coffee' where i get my pannini sandwich, cafe latte and
on the way back i grab my 10p newspaper to read back in my room...when
i'm chilling back at the guesthouse and have finished reading about the
daily multiple murders, car crashes, drug seizes, kidnappings and
political debates about smeltering plants and corruption i get to watch
a trini channel called Gayelle.. this channel is highly entertaining
just for how unproffesional it is.. the sound dips and then blares
between each shot so i'm forever reaching over to turn the volume up
and down, the presenters are great fun but seem like they are all
pretty new to their jobs but the news is the best highlight of the
channel, this guy reads the news as normal then the last story is a bit
different from the dangerous world of trinidad and then he pulls out a
joke everyday at the end.. just before i got to the cafe here there was
a story sbout a nnewly married couple in america where the guy branded
his intials with a hot poker onto the womans buttocks to let other men
know that she's his property, the newsreader cracks a joke at the end
saying.. "well unless you initials are HIV, it's not gonna stop
anyone.."
well it's friday and i'm checking out of my guesthouse in a couple of
hours, i'm not sure if i'm gonna stay in trinidad and head to maracas
bay for the weekend but i've heard the weathers gonna be a bit crappy
or jump on a plane or ferry over to tobago for a week or two???
