Just as we were dipping into the Albuquerque airport, we felt the plane begin to ascend again. A few minutes later, the pilot came on the intercom and told us that we couldn't land in Albuquerque due to low visibility; but that we would continue on to Phoenix. Upon arrival in Phoenix, the 38 people with connecting flights got to take the plane on to Seattle, while the 88 of us who wanted to go to Albuquerque had to queue up and speak to agents about getting there. Of course, the best we could get was 7:35 PM tomorrow (all the rest of today's flights were canceled), so I found a hotel room near the airport and decided to regroup.

I went out to Mill Avenue in Tempe, where there are a lot of restaurants/bars, etc. I bought a ticket to the Insight Bowl for $10 and had a quick dinner at Gordon Biersch before heading over to the bowl. One of the scalpers asked me, "Would you like to go to the football game, young lady?" The game was as good for people-watching as football-watching (one father complained that he had already spent $50 feeding his kids at halftime and then asked me if I wanted them!); I left in the 3rd quarter because the Golden Gophers (yes, the ones who beat UVA in the Music City Bowl last year) were rolling over Texas Tech (not that I have any particular affinity for them).

I had the same taxi driver going in and coming out; he was quite the piece of work. He was very kind though, and got me where I wanted to go, so it all worked out.

Arizona is a lovely state. I really like the mountains on the edge of the city and all the cacti everywhere. Tomorrow I'm either going to take an early flight to Albuquerque on standby or go to a museum and see Phoenix before my 735 flight leaves.
