What I did
Hiked the National Park
Spent five hours hiking in Skaftafell (part of Vatnajokull National Park). Yes, Kathy actually hiked five hours. No fear of darkness, as Iceland has nearly twenty-two hours of daylight each day! Hiking trails were well marked and very well maintained. Highlights included Svartifoss Falls, Sjonarnipa, (the glacial overlook) and Skaftafellsjokull (the glacier). We actually got within fifty yards of the tongue of the glacier. The history and scientific facts were so interesting!. Care was taken not to step into the quicksand!
As we continued along the Ring Road we saw many amazing sights. Waterfalls, black sand beaches, and different views of the glaciers. We never imagined the number of sheep and horses we would see in the pastures along the road. We stopped at Jokulsarion to see the beautiful glacial lagoon complete with icebergs.
The weather and landscape seem to change by the hour. Iceland is an amazing place even in the rain. A new friend told us they have had more rain in the last four days than in the last four months. For the first time the country issued a Rain Warning. What luck!
We had a great dinner at Humarhofnin in Hofn. The lobster was good, but it couldn't touch our Maine lobsters. Note: No sign of Bunny in Iceland.
