As is the case everywhere, the holiday season in Istanbul was filled with event after event, and it was as exhausting as the holidays are anywhere in the world. By the time New Year's Eve arrived (which fell on a Monday this year, so we all had to work), we were worn out. No one had any particular plans this time around, so rather than head to a party, we met up with Marijke at Amer and Sheri's for a home-cooked dinner and a Batman marathon, then hit up Bar-ish for a few hours before calling it quits around 5:30am.  And thus began 2013.

January is traditionally the month when we go into hibernation. This year was no different, and we were further encouraged by a few extra snow days here and there when school got called off. We took the opportunity to get to the cinema for a few movies on the big screen (absolutely loved The Life of Pi) and to watch all three seasons of Downton Abbey.



One thing that got us out of the house at least once a week was the amazing arrival of an Ethiopian restaurant close to our house. Despite being a gigantic city at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Istanbul is rather lacking when it comes to international cuisine. Hence, the reason an authentic Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant run by actual Africans and featuring local dancing was very exciting.

Apart from that, there wasn't much time for anything else before we hit the road for our newest African adventure at the end of the month for our semester break: Uganda, ho!
