After horror stories of  3+ hour waits at the border we were up early Saturday morning and on our way.  Setting the alarm clock paid off and after only a 15 minute wait in line we were on US soil at a quarter to six.  We decided to stop for breakfast when little sleepy head decided to wake up.  To our surprise she slept all the away to Olympia, which is 150miles from the Canadian border.  Food in our tummies, gas and some groceries we where back on the road.  Thanks to a borrowed book from M&G we thought the Columbia River Gorge sounded interesting and worth a detour to check out.  The Columbia River separates Washington and Oregon sate and is just east of Portland.  We enjoyed lunch and a short hike to the top of Multonomah Falls.  At 642ft these falls are the second highest nonseasonal waterfall in the USA and said to be one of the northwest's most spectacular sights.  We think our Rockies have nicer ones.  Planned on spending the night in the Gorge State park but they were closed for the season.  Newburg just west of Portland is were we finally called it a day.

Why get up early on a Sunday?  From Newburg we headed west towards the coast.  This part of the country is a mosaic of farms, orchards, vineyards and woodlands.  Lincoln City we checked out the factory outlet stores.  Thought of you MDK when we saw the Rebork store.  Continued south on route 101 down to Newport.  Had lunch here and visited the Oregon Coast Aquarium.  Haley seems to enjoy seeing all the fish and squealed with delight most of the time we were there.  Finding the coast highways slower then the interstates.  Speed limits go from 60 to 80km.  Roads are winding and narrow shoulders. The slow pace is worth the scenic views of the coast.  Slept at Humbug Mountain State Park Campground.

Doing laundry today in Brookings then into California this afternoon to see the Redwoods.

PIctures to be added at later date.

Sounds great!
You guys are giving me itchy feet! I'm glad to hear that it seems like Haley is enjoying the drive, and it seems like you are making pretty good time too. Are you guys planning a stop in California to visit the your sister?

PCH
You will certainly find the coastal highway much slower but they ARE worth the view! Who needs to look at another interstate? Just wait until Big Sur-- breathtaking!

How is the weather?

Your map is wacky-- it has you going through Portland, PA.
Boy, would I be mad at you if you came that far and didn't stop in to say hi!

Safe travels!
d.
