Heading west to catch sum sun after 4 days without! The plan was to head to New Plymouth to get some sun, as promised on the tv weather!!Hamilton had thick cloud cover so easy to leave there.
Having planed our route (theres a lot of roads up here) We set off. Noted that we covered 110 miles yesterday.
We also noyiced some familiar land marks as the beginning of our journey took us along the Rotorua road that we travelled on last week!!
Stopped at a cafe for lunch at a small town called Ohaupo. Interestingly the cafe adjoined a clock shop with hundreds of clocks in it!!Including some cuckoo clocks ,starting at $3 grand!! Fortunately lunch was cheaper than that!! Got some shots of a huge tree, which may have been a Rata just outside the shop. From there on to Teawamutu,a much bigger town. There are millions of towns here in the north Island. As soon as you speed up to 58mph bang theres another one!!!If its not that its road works slowing us down, any one would think there had been a storm through here!!
That brings us to Waitomo, famous for its caves. Well certainlly been a storm through here. Paddocks and paddocks were flooded, including what were corn crops. All we could see was the tops of the plant, you know the fluffy bit with seeds on it.
We then drove through a gorge which was lined with native bush, and even some tunnels to negotiate!! Most rivers were still swollen from all that left over Australian rain!!However there still was plenty of dairy farming going on! No doubt that will keep James busy at Fonterra !!
After several hours of travel it became apparent that todays mileage will far exceed that of yesterday!!In fact we travelled 152 miles. Thats around 250 kms.No wonder we needed to stop for another coffee at Mokau.
We also encountered some interesting sculptures at Otorohanga. Seemed to be the home of all things kiwiana!!On route found 3 new mystery cars for you to guess at!!
Now at New Plymouth Beach camp, which is nice and quiet. PLUS the sun is out. Yeer our plan worked, here's hoping for tomorrow!!
Mileage so far since leaving Chch 1487 miles= approx 2500 kms!!!
