Weather is far from perfect here!! In fact since the Big Day out, it really hasn't stopped RAINING!!!!
However that hasn’t stopped our tiki tour at all. We headed off in the clockwork orange bus to Piha!! About a half hour drive from here.
The drive was (you guessed it windy) clad in native bush. We worked out that this is where Irena Asher disappeared and kept a sharp eye out for clues. Other than a couple of hippy buses we didn’t notice anything accept green bush, pongas and a couple of car parks. I commented that they were probably looking for some one. In fact they were looking like meeting prior to a search,or may have just been having a walk,in the rain!!
The weather at Piha was surpisingly wet!!! So we managed to resist climbing Lion Rock which can be slippery when wet!!Followed by a walk in the rain along the beach towards the surf life saving club house. We needed to ford what I shall call Piha river, but being low tide it was only knee deep!
After wading through the black sand, which this beach has in spades, we approached the club house. What a surprise we got to see that there was car parking there!!We had gone the wrong way and parked at the north Piha car park!! A return walk was required to rectify our blunder, also in the rain.
We soon found ourselves back in front of the clubhouse this time in the bus, parked strategically 4 some good shots of course!!(for those of you who don’t know Piha surf life saving is a top rated tv reality show so the set is frequently viewed by mostly kiwis)
All of the sudden we were struck by an irresistible urge to have an ice cream!! Somehow she ended up with both of them ! Then onto some photo shooting. At one stage a life guard burned off in the quad bike down the far end in a hurry. However there seemed to be no drama as she just hung around some boaties for a while. Weather there could have been an some first aid required We may never know!!
The I.R.B’s came in and all was quiet. A Man said to his kids we might be on T.V. LOL!! Some how I doubt it, as was a very quiet day at the beach and no cameras in sight!!There were a dozen or so swimmers and a few more surfies , including a stand up paddle boardie.
I was disappointed that there were no Kombis there!!!Only a Nissan safari on the beach launching a small boat. However this was driven with great gusto presumably so he didn’t get stuck in the black sands of Piha!!
We managed not to get lost on the way back!! We called in at pak n save for some more supplies. Looks like chicken tonight!!However there was a dinner party going on at camp and we got invited for a Mexican meal. So looks like chicken tomorrow night!!
Unfortunately theres a severe weather warning for the next few days, lots more rain!! In fact the whole North Island is full of it ,so there’s no where to run!! We will stay here until we can head for some sun, which looks like Taranaki on Tuesday!!Good grief!!!That will be 4 days of rain by then!!Our camp grounds are already resembling a lake, so here’s hoping we don’t end up swimming!!!Extra care is been taken as the grass is known to be slippery when wet!!!
