We headed for New Plymouth via the Forgotten World Highway. We drove up SH 41, after Moerangi is the Waituti Saddle Lookout, I got some really ace pictures of low clouds that were covering the mountains! From Taumarunui there was a sign for the Forgotten World Highway Stunning and no fuel for 151km! (Good job we'd filled up earlier). It's a lovely (long) drive and has ever changing scenery. I was busting for a pee when we got to the end, however Robert managed a mans pee stop in the Tangarakau Gorge. The most interesting thing on this Highway was Hobbits hole. A really rickety old looking tunnel, it was dark and narrow, whilst in it it was how I imagine the light at the end of the tunnel when you die to look. We drove through the first town with a cafe/ bat at Whangamomona and got to Stratford in about 2.5 hours. From Stratford we drove up SH3 to New Plymouth.
At New Plymouth we set up at the Top 10 site and had dinner, we met Paula and Lee, who were cycling through NZ. They actually set off in Alaska and have cycled all the way here! I'm impressed but I think they're crazy too.
We went into town and walked along the front. We oo'd and ah'd at the "wind wand" a tall thin pole with a light on the end that waves around in the wind.... There had also been a stone sculpture competition held earlier in the week and the results we on display along the front so we had a look at these too. They are all up for auction at the end of the week, it's a shame we won't be around.
We then had a drive to Bell Block to see where IVE have their factory, then back to the Top 10 where we sat chatting with Paula and Lee until rather late. They're a great couple and they are thinking of moving to NZ too.
