Hola,

After a short journey from Colonia to the Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, we were greated by rain, which mean´t all we could do on our first afternoon was laundry and shopping!!! We visited a local craft market and it was during this time I realeased that the World Cup Qualifier Play Offs were taking place the following day, Uruguary v Costa Rica in Montevideo!!!!  I tried to get a couple of tickets for us but unfortunately they were all sold... boo!!!!

We were given several options for activities for the following day but to be honest none of them really appealed to us, most of the group decided to go on a city tour, we however decided to do our own tour. Montevideo doesn´t have a lot to see and do, so our walking tour lasted around 3 to 4 hours and was mainly walking down the main shopping street in the city to the Inpendenance Plaza.  The Plaza is nice however on one side is the ugliest building you will ever see, they really ought to knock it down!!!

After a lovely evening meal, just me and Kate, we headed to a bar to watch the match, the bar wasn´t buzzing with excitement in fact there were 4 Urugurians in there, still they got really excited when the home team took the lead, then really really nervous when Costa Rica equalised 4 minutes later!!!! However at the end of the match Uruguay edged the match 2-1 and were going to the World Cup next summer.  So we headed to a square near the hotel as I thought there might be a little celebrating going on... OMG, does this country know how to celebrate!!!!  Thousands and thousands of people all singing and chanting, car horns beeping and motorbikes revving, and the traffic on Montevideo´s main street brought to a halt... great fun and really good natured!!!

That evening made our stay in Montevideo hugely memorable, so pleased Uruguay won... still I hope England get to play them in the summer!!!!

Off to inland Uruguary next and the town of Salto...

Blog you later
