Of all of the cities that we are going to visit on this trip, Helsinki was one of the cities that I was not sure what to expect. The city seems fairly modern and most sights were within walking distance. However, since it was absolutely pouring rain this morning we opted for a Helsinki Card valid on the tram and buses.
Today we visited the Sveaborg Sea Fortress that was built the Swedish in the 18th century to protect the city from attack from Russia. However the Russians did manage to conquer Finland shortly after it was built! We also saw the main square with an impressive cathedral and the Market Square near the pier. And, we took a trip on the tourist tram around the city and stopped off at the Olympic Stadium from 1952.
Tomorrow we will visit the Temple Church, a church built into solid rock in the morning and maybe do some shopping. In the afternoon we will take the fastboat to Tallinn.
