Kevin and I went on a one-week all-inclusive vacation in the Canary Islands this past week. I booked the holiday through a Norwegian travel agency. I attempted to use my Norwegian skills to book the trip and the only error was the spelling of my name and the email address the confirmation was sent to! Just minor errors.
The Canary Islands are volcanic islands located off the west coast of Africa. They are a popular resort destination for lots of European travelers. We weren't sure what to expect so we decided to book an all-inclusive resort. If we were to go again, I think that we would just book a regular hotel or apartment and stay right in the city.
The trip was nice and relaxing. We had great weather and spent most of our time laying by the pool and reading. On other days we did a jeep tour of a nearby island, rented a car and drove to the other side of the island to go to Loro Parque (zoo and aquarium), and went in to the main resort area of Playa Las Americas to see the beach and go to markets.
Our resort was about 10km outside of the city centre, so we found the evenings got boring after the first couple of nights. The novelty of pouring your own drinks soon wears off and you realize just how terrible the evening shows & entertainment are. Hmmmm...maybe that's why they let you pour your own drinks!
Anyway we had a great time and enjoyed the warm weather.
----
Differences between some Caribbean resorts and Canary resorts:
GOOD excellent food and pastries
BAD you can smoke anywhere and everywhere
GOOD everyone is very dressed up in the evenings
BAD lots of men in speedos by the pools
GOOD Irish Coffees are always on the drink menu
