In November, I attended a two week course in Houston. It was a long way to travel to Houston from Norway and I would have much rather preferred to attend a course somewhere closer to home. However, it was a welcome change in weather. While Stavanger was experiencing a very rainy month, I got to enjoy some warm weather in Houston. It was even 30oC one day!

When I have visited Houston for work in the past, I usually spend my evenings shopping and trying different restaurants. Since this trip was for two weeks and I would be spending an entire weekend in the city, I decided to do some actual sightseeing.

Houston has a museum district so on the Saturday, I visited the Houston Natural Science Museum and the Houston Fine Arts Museum. Both of the museums were well worth the visit...in fact I ran out of time in the Fine Arts Museum! There are lots of interesting gold artifacts in the art museum. I also got a chance to visit Rice Village and see some of the Rice University Campus on Saturday.

On Sunday, I made a trip out to the Johnson Space Centre. I had visited the Space Centre on a previous trip to Houston but thought that it was time to see it again. The shuttle tour of the NASA facility is interesting but nothing was happening in any of the buildings since it was a Sunday. On the way back I stopped at the Kemah boardwalk to check out the shops and sights there. There are mainly just tourist shops and restaurants there but it was a nice afternoon to spend some time outdoors.

And, during my Houston trip I did manage to do some shopping as well. I seem to have adjusted to the prices in Norway...that is until I shop somewhere else and then realize how much cheaper things are. On this trip to Houston I really noticed how inexpensive goods are in the US. I also realized how cheap it is to eat out in Houston!

The trip to Houston was good in that I saw a different side of Houston...there is more to Houston than just massive highways, shopping malls and restaurants.
