Where I stayed
Being right on the East coast of Africa Lamu has been influenced by numerous cultures and as a result feels far less like East Africa and a lot more like a cross between; North Africa, the middle East and India. Far more important than that is our journey, which started on the West coast of Africa and now we're on the East...West to East baby! Anyway, Lamu is delightfully chilled out and there is only a slight chance of being attacked by Somalian guerrillas as you get to the ferry crossing. There are no cars on Lamu and everything is run about on donkeys, which I think everyone can agree is brilliant. Its a bit of a traveler cliche but it really did feel like stepping back in time, apart from the internet cafe's and all the mobile phones. We did plan a lovely trip to see coral reefs and then go fishing for our dinner, but true to form one of us got sick (Kk) and we had to cancel. We were staying in a 'coral castle' so that was a consolation, although coral turns white when its dead so it was only after I suggested visiting the coral castle that Kk informed me we "were sleeping in it".... "oh". Tasty lobsters and gigantic crabs a plenty, plus a swim in the nicest sea to date.
