Flag of Mali  , Mopti,
Monday, August 16, 2010

After 2 extra days on the ferry, involving accidently throwing the room key in the river (le cle sortie mes main, e maintenon, le cle c'est dans le fleuve) the forcible removal of our cabin door, and 2 complimentary cases of salmonella we arrived in Mopti.  We decided to visit the doctor, whose English was not as good as his French, who told us 'You both have malaria’…. WHAT!?!?!  ‘Oh, sorry, my English is not so good, you don’t have malaria’.  Brilliant.  But we did get some medicine for the salmonella and after a day of rest set of to Djenne to see the biggest mud mosque in the world which is actually a lot more beautiful than ‘large, mud building’ would lead you to believe.

Transport to Djenne consisted of taxi bush, or bastardised 9 place minibus with all the seats ripped out and replaced with wooden benches and then filled with 29 people, including 3 small weeing children, a live chicken, 3 bags of rice and half a kitchen in cooking pans.  Taxi bush is quicker to say though.  Djenne itself was pretty interesting, lots of mud architecture (honestly better than it sounds), a bored but informative guide, and a large market consisting mostly of dried fish and small led torches from china.  There are Sudanese style houses with 4 pillars, 1 for each wife, the first does the cooking, the second has the children, the third looks after guests, and the fourth doesn’t have to do anything other than be young, fit and looked after by the rest of the women whilst satisfying the aging polygamist after he has gotten bored of his other 3 wives.  Needless to say, this was my favourite type of house and I will be trying to bring this back to the UK tout suite.
