In The Beginning

1500, Spanish established Asuncion and traded with the local Guarani.

  1700, Jesuits introduced Guaranis to more European settlers and their crafts, until their expulsion seventy years later.
  1811, Paraguay gained uncontested Independence from Spain

  For 40 years, Casper Rodriguez de Francia gained control of the Paraguayan government and isolated it from the world in order to make it grow. It did grow, but the country was ruled by fear. He constantly had his food and water checked for poison, no person was allowed more than six paces from his vicinity and slept in a different bed every night.

  1860, Carlos Antonio Lopez ended Paraguay's isolation by  building railways, telegraph systems and a formidable army.

His megalomaniac son succeeded him and declared war on Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. This was was bloody; outnumber 10 to 1, Paraguay lost6 half of its prewar population and kids as young as 12 were fighting.

1930, Paraguay and Bolivia were fighting over the chaco in the north, after 80,000 people died a treaty awarded Paraguay 3/4 of the disputed territory.

Post world wars

  1954, Military coup brought 35 years of military dominance rule. Many immigrants from Germany (some Nazi supporters) entered during this period.

At the moment the leader is an ex priest who was exposed buy his opponents during the elections. They found that during his time as a high priest he had many children to many women.
