History
In The Beginning
Ø Various farmers and herders pre dated the Incas. These being Aymara, Atacameno, El molle, Tiwanaku, Chango, Diaguita and Mapuche.
Ø 1541, Conquistador Pedro De Valdivia crossed the harsh Atacama dessert to found Santiago.
Ø Mapuche fought European colonisation for over three centuries.
Ø 1818, Argentine, Jose De San Martin liberated Chile, Giving power to Bernado O Higgins
Ø 1890, A civil war broke out resulting in 10,00 deaths
Post world wars
Ø 1930 - 1960, North American companies gained control of important Chilean mining companies.
Ø 1973, General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the government killing many leftist supporters, thousands went into exile.
Ø 1989, Pinochet's terrible regime ended. He was then kept under house arrest in England awaiting trail.
Today
Ø Chili recovered from the 2001 - 2003 depression to become the economic star of Latin America.
Ø 1 week ago Chili was struck by an earth quake measuring 8.7 on the RIC TA. The last I herd, 497 people died.
Ø Right wing government coming into power soon.
