Where I stayed
Up at 6 am to watch the sunrise, followed by a session in the surf without the crowds. This was my new morning routing. To live a life like this, is to live a life of bliss. My time on the island of Santa Catarina has so far been memorable. It has such a diverse landscape. Ranging from picturesque lakes, secluded waterfalls, rugged sand dunes and curvaceous beaches with consistent swell.
I spent the first two days on the less developed southern end
One early morning, as I sat on my rundown rented surfboard while waiting for a set of waves to come in. Nature decided to reveal itself in all itīs glory. A blue streamline hump emerged from the ocean, the sun glistening off it glorious body, followed by a recognisable fin, just 15 meters away.
A moment so unique, almost unimaginable. At first, I was in a state of bewilderment, followed by immense appreciation. The sensible side of my brain kicked in. A moment of hart racing panic follwed. I had to get the fuck out of there. I don't want to die just yet, I still had months of exploring ahead of me.
I snapped my head over the left shoulder, to see a local looking in the same direction with a proud smile slapped on his face. Cupping my hands together with a wide eyed expression, I motioned a fin, alternating my thumb up and down. As if to ask him if itīs safe to stay or should I go. He smiled, turned his thumb up and continued waiting for the next set. I decided to paddle just a little bit closer to shore
I met a local, named Bere. He was trying to start up a tourism business. He sang in a band, surfed, practiced Capoeira, had a 14ī sail boat. All this, combined with an enthusiastic charm, warm hart, a knowledge of how to get to the "secrete spots" a great sense of humor and motivated by the need to fix the roof over his mothers head. I was confident that he would do well. His marketing campaign was somewhat non-existent. I talked to him about advertising and such things. Hopefully he took it on board.
I told him I would go on a tour with him around a lake, Lagoa De Peri, to see a waterfall, . This isnīt my style, normally I would roll around and locate the waterfall myself. But I enjoyed his company, his stories and was curious about his life style. I had a great time. He didn't make much dosh off me. I hope he does well with his business, one day I may return to see how he has progressed.
