Picked up the rental car just down from the hotel.
Tried to find a breakfast place on the road...big mistake! We decided to stop in Luquillo. We drove around a bit trying to find a traditional restaurant, but everything was either closed or a fast food place. We went over by the beach (which was beautiful) and everything was boarded up.
We went back over to where we saw a franchise taco place and figured that was the best we were going to do...but then I saw the lights on at a Mexican restaurant (El Sabor Mexicano). So we went in there. What a find that was! The kids and I got 2 soft tacos and a drink for $3, and DH got a crispy taco combination plate and drink. The food was great. At first we were the only ones in there, but then a lot of school kids came in for lunch.
We asked the server why everything was boarded up along the beach, but her English was only so-so (better than my Spanish though!). So she asked another guy that worked there, and he didn't quite understand our question either, so he asked this guy from the school next door (a teacher, I assume) who came over to talk to us. They had thought we wanted a place to rent. Apparently all the places we had seen were beach rentals, but it was already off season, so no one was around. Anyway, mystery solved!
After our great lunch (and DH had a very pretty tres leches for dessert), we continued our journey to El Yunque, only to find out that we had passed the turn off...
