Went with DS on a school field trip to the Jensen-Alvarado Ranch, an 1880s Living History Interpretive Program and Museum. I guess when it was originally bought, there were 500 acres, but now all that remains are 32 acres nestled between housing tracts.

The original brick house that was the home of the Jensen-Alvarados and their ten children still stands with some of their original furnishings and its original wallpaper.

The docents, dressed in period clothing, took us around and showed us some farm animals (the kids got to feed the pigs and sheep carrots), took us on a tour of the house and winery building (now the "museum"), instructed and let the kids use a washboard to wash some handkerchiefs, make ice cream and tortillas, and showed us some of the equipment used on the ranch.

The kids especially loved making the ice cream and tortillas. Well, I think they liked EATING the ice cream and tortillas best. It was interesting to see some California history in action.
