Day 1 (Mon, Aug 18, 2003)

DH, SS, DD, DS, and I drove up to Santa Barbara to get away from the heat. After a long drive we checked into the hotel and got settled into a large room that could accommodate all of us.

Day 2 (Tue, Aug 19, 2003)

We spent the day at the beach. We rented a kayak and had fun with that.

For dinner, SS watch DD and DS while DH and I went to Epiphany Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant is partly owned by Kevin Costner. It is housed in a tiny little house, but it is so cozy and comfortably elegant. We had an amazing dinner, and the best wine, "Sea Smoke."

Day 3 (Wed, Aug 20, 2003)

Made the drive home. However, it was very surreal. I remember rounding the corner, and there was a strange car in front of our house. It was like it happened in slow motion. We parked in the driveway. People got out of the car and approached us. The man said to us, "I'm sorry, I hit your house."

WHAT???????

We had been looking at the car and people. When we turned to look at the house it all came together...the little tree had been mowed down, as well as a few bushes, and the front of our house was a mess. It could have been worse though, somehow the 70 in x 70 in picture window was still in one piece, albeit completely warped.

We found out later that the man's sister had been driving (he had been teaching her to do u-turns), and she made a u-turn right into our house. How she managed this I do not know...as she had to go over an 8-in curb, up a slight hill and over a tree into the house, our 2 month-old, just-built house. She blew out all four of the tires on their car.

We were just glad that we weren't home. At the time of evening the car ploughed through, all of us would normally have been outside working in the yard, or in the kids' case, playing. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the accident (they also had 2 little girls in the car who were NOT buckled in!).

Not a good thing to come home to!
