Today after a great breakfast at Novo on Higuera St, we walked the three blocks to Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa.

If I remember right, I think this was the mission I made for my 4th grade mission project. The structure was made of sugar cubes, and the roof was made of cardboard. I made clay pots for "trees" by hand out of dough. The trees were made of baby's breath. I remember that part quite vividly. I suspect that most Californians will never forget their mission project. Of course, now, they have these kits that you buy and put together. I know because this is what my son did for his project.

Anyway, it was fun seeing the mission made of real bricks and mortar, rather than my original vision of sugar cubes.

Mass was taking place while we were there, so we did not get to see the church. However, if you go through the gift shop, there is a good size museum you can walk through for free. Make a donation if you are inclined to do so.

The most interesting thing in the collection was a black wedding dress. Apparently, Spanish tradition held that if a widow remarried, she must wear a black wedding dress. I had never heard of such a thing and thought it was quite interesting.
