Ah, Stonehenge, that ancient ruin that is still a mystery to all. There are theories and legends, and all kinds of ideas about who built it and why. But no one really knows. It appears that there were wooden structures built first, thousands of years ago, then the massive stone pieces added later, still thousands of years ago. Certainly it is amazing that primitive people were able to move stones that weighed up to 50 tons over miles and miles of land to that spot, and then hoist them on top of each other...well, it's practically unthinkable. I guess that's why some think aliens built it.
The day we visited, we had gotten a bit of drizzle here and there throughout the day on our tour of Windsor Castle, Bath and now finally, Stonehenge. Unfortunately, the weather turned, and it was pretty stormy. The wind was blowing so hard we could not use our umbrella (in fact we had tried but the wind snapped it, and it broke!), so we were pelted with hard rain as we made our way around this magical monument.
Despite the snarling wind and biting rain, this was DD's favorite place in England. The rest of us enjoyed it too.
