All of our hard work learning Spanish (!!!) went to waste once we entered Brazil, it was Portugese all the way so we were a little bit lost!  It took us 30 hours to travel from Iguazu to Paraty, twice we tried to get off the bus too early as we couldnīt ask whether we were at the right bus station or not!  I experienced my first mugging in Sao Paulo bus station - an old lady demanded one of my plums off me, she could have had a machete down her knickers so I gave it to her quickly!

Paraty was like a little oasis away from the craziness of Buenos Aires.  We planned on spending a couple of days here to celebrate Helenīs birthday....we didnīt leave for a week!  We stayed in a lovely hostel which was more like staying at someoneīs house, there was a huge pool surrounded by views of the jungle and we spent the evenings having bbqīs in the garden and supping frhly made caiprfuitas in the main square watching live music.  After being there less than 24 hours weīd invested in lilos and that is where we spent the rest of the week pretty much!!  The town is really small, itīs got cobbled streets and white washed buildings each with different coloured shutters and window frames and they still use horse and cart there!

Helenīs birthday was spent on an idyllic deserted beach which we had to climb over a hill through some forest to get to which made it seem even more exotic and we proceeded to roast ourselves there in the 39degree heat, slightly different from last year when we were building snowmen on her birthday!  The girls who ran the hostel were lovely and had baked Helen a birthday cake which saved me the trouble of potentially burning the kitchen down!  The plan was to go out for dinner then drinks in the evening, but then we got free caiprinhas at the hostel which meant the dinner swiftly got forgotten about...well we were getting fruit in our cocktails so that counted as a meal!  We went to the square for yet more cocktails and the night ended with us strolling home at 10am so all in all Iīd say it was a successful birthday celebration!

We spent our last day there doing a boat trip around the millions of islands surrounding Paraty, it was beautiful, the sea was so clear and turquoise and more importantly it was a very good tanning opportunity....sadly I forgot to remove the sunglasses so I am now sporting an interesting panda eye face.
