Mini Dubrovnik, on an island!

We seriously almost didn't make it here, folks. We missed our boat - so crowded in summer - and rushed to catch a bus. Whew! Once we arrived, we were so so glad we did! We stayed at great place in the old town, top floor, where Rick Steves himself stays! The walls are pink and the air is conditioned.

Sleepy Korcula Old Town, surrounded by Mediterranean blue water, was like a vacation from our vacation. We spent hours bathing and dipping on the rocky shore. Erin even passed out for a drowsy spell. Everyone was slow and mellow, even the shopkeepers. Island time.

Korcula was first settled in 1200 BCE. 600 years later, the Greeks settled there, Naturally, the Romans followed, around 300 BCE, conquering and settling as they did. Since then, the island has been settled by Hungarians, Venetians, the French, Germany and Yugoslavia.

Marco Polo is the big man on Korcula. His supposed home is there, and is now a museum. We saw at least three Marco Polo gift shops where they sold - get this - Marco Polo Polo Shirts!!! Other than Polo Gear, the town has dozens of artisan shops, with locally made jewelry, clothing, honey and olive oils. Like in Dubrovnik, lavender sachets are popular souvenirs.

There are children everywhere, mostly happy until mid-afternoon sunstroke. We noticed that most of the children we saw were girls. Maybe the boys were kept on another part of the island, or in dungeons. This is a very family-oriented place, and we often saw children hanging out and playing in their parents' places of business. The parents would usually be engaged with the children when not attending customers. Neighbors, both in restaurants and homes sat, talked and laughed quietly together.

Erin said the room for this town was Grandma's attic. Or maybe just Grandma's house. It was that slow, comfortable, friendly and relaxing. What a perfect place to wind down our trip before Split-ing.
