After Phuket we were looking forward to seeing a different side to Thailand; a more relaxed, friendlier, happy side that everybody who has been to Thailand raves about. I'm not sure we will be able to find the idyllic, island paradise as in The Beach (incidentally filmed on Koh Phi Phi) as I'm not sure such a place exists anymore, but we'll have a little look while we're here.
Koh Phi Phi itself is a lovely, pretty little island that got hit quite badly by the tsunami a few years back. The place has since rebuilt, and bar a monument to the victims you would not be able to tell what happened here.
There's not an awful amount to do on the island bar relax and enjoy the scenery. One activity that Phi Phi is famous for, however, is diving and Emma went off and got her Open Water badge. As I hadn't dived it in six years I needed a quick review before I could join her under water and it was great fun. We saw all manner of marine life including fish (strangely) eels, octopuses, sea-snakes but best of all we got to swim with turtles.
Anyone who has scuba-dived before will know how amazing it is. Anybody who hasn't should really try it as it is wonderful. Unfortunately we didn't get to see any sharks - two whale sharks turned up at a dive site about an hour after I had left so they're still on the list of things to see.
Our next stop is Koh Phag-nan and the full moon party. I'm not sure what to expect really but we figured we should go seeing as we're on this side of the world. I imagine it's going to be a load of tourists in various stages of intoxication. As many of you will know I'm no stranger to various stages of intoxication, so you'll have to wait and read about it later.
