After the relative cool of the Cameron Highlands the heat and humidity of Penang took its toll. It could have been the early start (up at 6 to catch a minibus at 7 am), or indeed the late finish (beers and a bonfire until 3am) but whatever it was it affected us.

Staying in our cheapest backpackers so far; double bed and a fan for 4 GBP and are enjoying our cheapest beers at 1 GBP but we're both seem to have seen enough of Malaysia and we're ready to move on to pastures new. Georgetown; where we're staying in Penang, is pleasant enough despite the fact the first local to greet us as we got off the minibus was a huge rat. If you're happy enough to overlook the lack of pavements it's quite a nice little town to spend a couple of days wandering around. That said it lacks the friendly, laidback vibe of the Cameron Highlands. Plus, it has a similar history to that of Melaka, a town we visited earlier which we both enjoyed. Still, I mustn't complain. The food has been great and we're starting to see people we've met along the way so it's great to share advice, tips and stories.

Tomorrow morning we're planning to move on to Langkawi, an island near the Thai border. Another early start with the ferry departing at 8:15 am is a bit of a bind but the promise of duty-free beer at just 30p a bottle is more than enough to appease us. Plus, it'll be the first beach that we'll be seeing so having spent the last three weeks wandering around various museums and attractions in various cities, hiking in the highlands and generally being on the move since we got here, a few days lazing on the beach with cold beer has attained heavenly status.

Whilst I don't think there's a great deal to do in Langkawi beyond stay on the beach and drink cheap beer, we will have other things to do, namely starting to come up with a rough plan for the rest of the trip. So far geography has dictated we go from Singapore to Malaysia, and in a few days we'll be getting ourselves over to Sumatra, Indonesia for a couple of weeks. After that though we're not sure. Issues have arisen over Thai visas over how long we need, single visit or multiple entry etc, but another issue which needs a lot more thought is whether to visit Myanmar, i.e. Burma or not. It's not something that can be decided easily so we'll need to give this plenty of consideration.
