We set off to the lakes in search of fly fishing and when I stirred in the bus at dawn to the sight of mist and lots of water it was looking promising.

Pucon turned out to be perfect from every angle. Picturesque volcano over the lake and a cosy and welcoming hotel with a lake-view room. Warm days, clear rivers, breathtaking scenery for cycling and Long evenings with lingering sunsets. Pucon itself is an incredibly pretty alpine-style town with lovely cafes, restaurants and shops and views round every corner.

And , last but not least, the fly fishing. Stop Reading for those not interested. Mario's was recommended by the locals we spoke to. After snooping through all his beautiful hand-tied flies we came back to meet Paulo, the English-speaking guide and the next day we were being rowed down turquoise, crystalline water in the shadow of volcanos and mountains. Two fish landed and returned to the river each and we had had the morning we had been hoping for.
