After a 2km hike through the scorching semi-desert to the bus stop we caught a dancing bus (blaring Party music and wide open windows) to Polamar and then a taxi to Pampatar to our host family for Sanish school. Pampatar definately is the most affluent town we saw in Venezuela: nice townhouse developments, big shopping centres and tree lined streets.
We had a great week with a great family and met some really cool people learning Spanish. The family we stayed with only spoke Spanish and really engaged with us which helped a lot! 5 days of intense spanish at the school and I can now understand more so that I can at least say Hablo mas un porcito.... (speak more a little spanish rather than nothing.)
I have promised our host family Jesus, Maria and Jesus that I will put something on the BLOG in EspaNol to prove that I have learnt something.:
Muchas gracias por su grande hospitalidad!!!
On Tuesday and Thursday we went to the beach after school. Playa Parquita was a logvely beach apart from the amount of people (August is Venezuelan holiday time). Playa El Yaque is the windsurfing capital and had dirty-looking water, even more peole. In search if shade we (us plus Hannah and Andrew from our class) found a bar under a thatch roof and a friendly Venezuelan who gave us a good oppertunity to practice our Spanish.
We decided it would be best to book our tickets early with CONFERRY in hopes of reaching Puerta La Cruz early on Sat with time to get to the Bus Terminal to get our tickets to Santa Elena de Urayen near the Brazilian border. The Ferry office near the school was heaving on the Wednesday and it took over 2 hours to get our
tickets. Bad luck we had to take the SLOW ferry again as the fast was already fully booked until end of the following week. We decided after last time to book cheap tickets as they were better than first class.
After a good week we had a last supper with Hannah and Andrew and said our good byes to the family. We can now get by in Spanish- just what we need in Brazil!!
