We parked and started walking towards the down town area and all these black things were falling around us and as we looked up we saw Bat's in the hundreds...big furry black giant fruit bats!! And yes that was all bat poop falling around us. These bats are everywhere!! Matt made a new friend an older lady from port dover when he decided to play Tarzan in the middle of the street and swing from a wine. Never a dull moment.
We were lost in all the souvenir boutiques, stuffed koala toys and ugg's for a while laughing at silly shirt prints and trying on Outback hats. Jonas went and had his hair cut and we found a place that had licorice ice-cream (thank you Jonas) ! We spent some time by the pier and then headed on out to a place that had been recommend to us by the butcher the first day that we were here called Crystal Cascades. it is a series of waterfalls and watering holes for swimming and it is beautiful. It was a bit of a hike and the boys were carrying our very large pick nick basket with wine and beer ;0) nothing like an australian workout.
We found a great spot and the kids went swimming in the cascades with Matt and we fed fishes it was fantastic.
At 5 we had to head out and home for a quick change as we had booked an Australian night zoo adventure and cook out.
At 7 we got to the cairns night zoo and there was a large buffet and open bar. It was great. So much good food and good old ause fun with an outback ranger playing the guitar and singing camp slogs. we met the koalas and birds and then grabbed out flash lights to head through the zoo for the crock feeding it was Awesome. These crocks were HUGE and I would not like to encounter one of these out in the wild. After we met all the animals we headed to a big bonfire where they served Billy tin cup tea and Damper an aussie deserts...but the best part was the 30 some kangaroos that were all around us. We were feeding them and playing with them, the ones with joe's are so sweet. The "Swaggie" sang and played music and we loved it, especially the kids! it was a lot of fun. THen we headed back and had drinks and danced to the music and some of us got to play instruments and be part of the musical ensemble. The kids got to try all the different Austrailian instruments and play along. By the time we left we were pretty tired but we could still muster enough energy to meet the wallaby ( I love those they are so cute)
It was a great day however we would have to get up before six am the next day as we were heading out on our reef adventure...
