Where I stayed
Suites Arrecifes
Today marks exactly 7 days left in Mexico. I couldn't stay asleep so I got online at 5am my time. Almost immediately I receive a call on skype from Carrie at 3am her time. I just got up and have a cup of tea in my hand and she was still up with a bottle of beer in her hand! It reminded me of that father/son oreo commercial.
Did my usual walk, swim, breaky, & tea. Then some beach chair time for some rays and a read. Feeling restless, (and broke) I chatted with Bev who told me that I should check out the Chedraui grocery store and the mall. After all my trauma/drama driving on the streets of Cancun I was hesitant but she told me just how easy the route was so I figured I would throw caution to the wind and give it a whirl. Arriving in Cancun, while driving the speed limit and using my turn signals, it happened. Behind me I heard that unmistakable 'Blip, blip" from a police vehicle informing you to pull over. Searching frantically in the rearview, I couldn't even see a cop, and really, what the hell did I do???? Nope, it was a motorcycle cop actually pulling over the non-rental car in the lane next to me. (so they don't just pick on tourists!) Proceeding down the highway, I swallowed the chunks of vomit and carried on to the mall. Chedraui is actually nicer than the Mega stores here and it certainly isn't difficult to be light years ahead of the Walmarts. The mall is huge and very similar to what we would see back home. And as I have been corrected, this type of mall in not a tourist mall as this is where everyone shops. I didn't buy anything in the mall and only bought a couple of food necessities at the grocery store. I did have a small hiccup while leaving the parking lot as I expected to pay at the gate and my ticket kept getting rejected. The lady in the car waiting behind told me to pay at the 'automatic?' She backed up and let me out of line so I could search for the elusive 'automatic.' Turns out that one must pay just inside the mall entrance at a machine which calculates how much your parking dues are. Another way to eliminate jobs I guess. I inserted my 10pesos and was allowed to leave. To be honest, I did have to drive around the block a couple of times to get my bearings but I was quite proud of tackling my fear of Cancun driving.
Back at the beach I'm just feeling a little blah. I don't have much cash, have seen pretty much everything in PM and wish I had a buddy here. As I said previously, everyone has been so nice to me here but they also have their own company and vacation to enjoy. Not a complaint...just a truth. I wasn't going to say it but I am missing my Carrie hugs an awful lot.
