Today we had a full day free in Rome. We set of early for Vatican City and were met with a 1 1/2 hour wait in a line that stretched half way around the wall. When we finally got in (only just avoiding a number of brawls with others in the line!) we made a B-line for the Sistine chapel, which was a half our walk from the entrance. There were amazing sculptures, tapestries and rooms pained by famous artists. When we got to the Sistine chapel it was packed and there were little people running around to tell you off for talking. It was smaller than i expected, but still amazing. The last judgement painting, on the wall behind the alter was my favorite (probably because i didn't have to put my back out to see it! hehe). From there we decided to leave the museums and head for St Peters Basilica. We walked through the square and headed into the basilica. It was a boiling day but we had to cover up to get into St Peters, so it was a bit uncomfortable. Inside the basilica was beautiful, but not over the top like some churches i have seen. From there we went to lunch, which was the crapest pasta i have ever tasted and a rip off! Claire and I took the metro to the Spanish steps and then tried to find the church of the cappachine monks (decorated with all the bones of past monks, freaky) but unfortunately we couldn't find it, so we headed round to the Trevi fountain and got some yummy gelato (probably for the 20th time since I've been in Italy, but when in Rome... hehe). Then we caught the Metro to Circus Maximus (where they used to hold the Chariot races) and wandered past the Forun and Colloseum again. From there we decided to head back to camp to have dinner and some drinks. Mel, Dan, Claire and I had a yummy dinner and got a 3lt jug of beer to kick off the night, then went over to the bar and had some drinks with the rest of the group until i thought i should put myself to bed.
