We travelled all day and arrived at Avignon in the South of France in the afternoon. Avignon is a gorgeous city, surrounded by walls and with a palace and cathedral in the center. It was home to a number of popes over a 70year period, i cant quite remember in what century. The popes came there because they were afraid of being assassinated in Rome. We headed into the City for dinner and had a delicious 3 course meal. We managed to negotiate a vegaterian meal for me in french (my tent buddie is a lot more fluent then I!) and pieced together a conversation with a french man in the restaurant who was eating very smelly cheese! As we wandered back to the campsite, we had a beautiful view of the walls of the city with a full moon hanging over it. It was insanely windy in the campsite and town, apparently due to Avignon being in between two mountain ranges. We were almost blown over on the walk home and i was sure we were going to wake up with a tree on us, but we got through the night in one piece.
