Today we flew from Singapore to Perth. We were met our friend, Digby, who farms about 3 hours SE of the city near a town of 2,500 called Kojonup. I met Digby when he was on an agricultural exchange in Canada in the early '80s and spent Christmas 1984/New Year's 1985 with him and his family.
Perth (population 1 million) is the capital of Western Australia and, as I remember, one of the prettiest cities in Australia. Although it is a city, it retains some of its small town feel. There are relatively few high rise building and the city is spread over a large area. The harbour, teeming with sailboats, is particularly beautiful.
Australia has no rabies or foot and mouth disease, nor do they want it! Therefore, their customs are very particular about what you can and cannot bring into the country. A Labrador Retriever was brought though by custom officers to sniff all the people who deplaned from our flight, not once, not twice, but three times!
