Getting on the crowded airplane for a flight of 20-some hours is a mentally and physically challenging ordeal. If you tend to panic in crowded spaces, it can be particularly trying. Good thing I don't have as long of legs as Martin has! We sat beside a young man from Sacramento of Sri Lankan heritage who was returning to Sri Lanka to help out with the aftereffects for the tsunami. Luckily, his immediate family lived inland and were OK, but dozens of his relatives who lived along the coast had simply disappeared.
For the first time ever, I was able to sleep on the flight. Between climbing San Francisco hills and ingesting "No Jet-Lag" pills, neither of us got too stir-crazy. I did, however, keep leaving things behind and Martin (or other thoughtful travellers) picked up after me - my jacket, my glasses and various other things. I was not so lucky with my guidebook. C'est la vie! (or maybe it's middle age???)
