Itīs officially the Christmas season in Colombia!

On our last night in Medellin, we learned that there was going to be an event in one of the main squares downtown, in the late afternoon and early evening.  John and I headed down, expecting almost a party atmosphere, and we were surprised to discover that we turned up just in time for the parade.  The parade had marching bands and people dressed as witches or carnival-type characters, and there was quite a large number of people out to watch.  After the parade, they had fireworks, and on our way back, in the dark, you could see that many parts of the city were lit up with fantastic light displays.  Each individual house had candles or little lanterns outside lining the streets, as well.

As it turns out, December 7 and 8 are a national holiday here in Colombia.  The 7th is the Day of Candles, celebrating the Immaculate Conception and the beginning of the Christmas season.  In addition, when we arrived in Salento, on December 8th, we found a similar celebration -- special event tents in the main square, tons of people out and about (for such a small town) and candles, baskets and special luminaries lining every street.  Our familyīs house had Christmas lights and a lit Christmas tree, in addition to their candles and luminaries.

Itīs hard to believe, since weīve been in such warm and humid climates for so long, but itīs beginning to look a bit like Christmas!
