So what's there to do in San Juan del Sur while you're waiting for turtle information? Most of it boils down to soaking up some salt water. There's a beach in town, where we've spent some time (in no particular order) walking around, watching sunsets, celebrating Halloween, swimming, and sipping liquados and cervezas
We also spent a day visiting a beach outside of town, called Maderas, where John rented a surfboard and went out to catch a few waves while I soaked up some sunshine and swam. He did quite well after a nine year break from the sport, and managed to not only get up but to even get a few pretty good rides in. It was amazing watching some of the other people out there -- the waves weren't even that big on the day we were there, but they still looked pretty good.
In addition to surfing and sunning, we also signed up one day for an afternoon of fishing. One place in town was offering a great deal on a sunset fishing trip, so we hopped into a boat and went and rode around for a while. On our boat, we had five people -- us, a random guy, and a couple that we had met originally on the boat to the Corn Islands. After hanging out with them on the islands for several days, we re-met them wandering the streets of San Juan del Sur. Between the five of us, we had four poles hanging off the boat, and after about an hour and a half of chasing birds around (hoping they might know where the fish were -- apparently the fish-tracker on the boat was busted) we eventually got a bite. John jumped to the reel and after a bit of a fight managed to bring in a nice sized tuna, perhaps around five pounds
Tonight, finally, we´re headed out to search for turtles, and then tomorrow we´re headed to Costa Rica. Another update will follow!
